Before Surgery Day
Set everything up before you go in. You'll thank yourself on Day 1.
SET UP YOUR RECOVERY SPACE
📦 Pre-open all medications and wound care supplies — you won't have the strength to manage packaging when you get home
⬆️ Move everything to elevated surfaces — counters, tables, shelves you can reach without bending over
🛏️ Set up a recovery station beside your bed — water, phone charger, medications, TV remote. Everything within reach without getting up
🪑 Identify your recovery chair — firm with armrests is ideal. Low sofas and soft chairs are much harder to get out of post-surgery
🚽 Consider a raised toilet seat — especially for inguinal and umbilical repairs where sitting is painful
PRACTICE THESE BEFORE SURGERY
🔄 Log roll out of bed — roll to your side first, push up with your arms, never sit straight up. Practice it a few times before surgery so it's second nature when you need it
🦀 Back into bed like a crab — back up to the edge, sit down, then lower yourself sideways. Much easier on your abdomen than trying to climb in straight
🪜 Plan your stairs — if your bedroom is upstairs, consider sleeping on the ground floor for Days 1–3
GET THESE BEFORE SURGERY DAY
💊 Stool softeners (Colace/docusate) — start Day 1, don't wait for constipation to develop
🧴 MiraLAX — have it on hand. If there's no bowel movement by Day 3, use it. Straining puts direct pressure on the repair site
🧊 Two ice packs — rotate them so one is always cold. 20 minutes on, 40 minutes off at the incision
🩲 Supportive underwear — snug but not tight. Especially helpful for scrotal or groin swelling after inguinal repair
🥤 Electrolyte drinks — Gatorade, Pedialyte. Staying hydrated matters more than eating the first couple of days
🍌 Soft, easy foods — bananas, yogurt, soup, crackers. Don't worry about eating much the first couple of days; hydration matters more
🌡️ Thermometer — fever over 101°F (38.3°C) is a warning sign. Have one ready so you can check
FOR YOUR CAREGIVER
📋 Make sure your caregiver has your surgeon's after-hours number before you go in
⏰ Set alarms for pain medication — don't wait for pain to peak before taking it
📝 Keep a note of what medications were taken and when — anesthesia affects memory more than people expect
🚗 Plan who is driving home — you cannot drive yourself, full stop
💚 Day 1 is the hardest day for caregivers too. It gets better quickly — usually within 48 hours.
THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO IN
😴 General anesthesia is safe — the grogginess and nausea you feel after are normal and temporary
📅 Days 1–3 are the hardest. Days 4–5 usually bring a real shift. Week 1 is survivable.
